Panama Canal Emergency Gates

When the Panama Canal was being built, engineers thought that the greatest danger to its mighty locks would be an out-of-control ship smashing through the double gates. So a safety measure was added to each lock: an emergency gate that could be swung into place within two minutes of the first sign of trouble.
