There is just one Jewish theological seminary south of the Rio Grande: the Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires, founded in 1962 by Rabbi Marshall Meyer '52. He and wife Naomi went to Argentina in 1959, when there were only 20 rabbis serving 850,000 Jews in all of Latin America. Besides starting the seminary, the Meyers established a large synagogue, an educational system, and a major program to publish Jewish works in Spanish.

When the military took over Argentina in the 19605, Meyer devoted much of his time to visiting political prisoners—many of whom were being tortured. Jacobo Temerman's classic account of his life under torture, Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number, is dedicated to Meyer.
