More than 80 people got involved with this special issue of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Many worked without remuneration, making it their own gift to the College. Forty-six class secretaries contributed columns on their classmates' contributions to society. Secretaries Fritz Hier '44, Alex Fanelli '42, and Mary Donovan '74 were helpful with ideas as well.

Intern David Sobie '94 put in many hours of archival and photo research, as did Dawn Conner '95, Juliet Bouyea 95, and Daphne Gaspard '95. We couldn't have found all those historical photos without John Scotford '38, and he couldn't have done it without beyond-the-call-of-duty research help from Pat Cope of Photographic Records or from Barbara Krieger, Anne Ostendarp Phil Cronenwett, Suzy Schwoerke, Phyllis Tetreault, Ken Cramer, and the rest of Baker Library's Special Collections staff. Erin Green 94 and Milissabel Vicente '94 deftly translated histories of the Argentine navy.

More help came from the Hood Museum's Kathleen O'Malley, Alumni Records's Deborah Coutermaarsh, Jeff Hinman '68, Technology Transfer's Alia Kan, Naval Ravikant '95 (who kept the huge layout from blowing up our computers), and Robert Pope (who loaned us his Twister game). Valuable advice came from Mike Choukas '51, Mike McGean '49, Bill Scherman '34, S. Russell Stearns '37, and the DAM Editorial Board.

The actual writing was done by Ericka Houck '93, Kai Singer '94, Dean Engle '91, Nancy Davies. Steve Lyons, Newc Eldridge '50, Jay Evans '49, David Shribman '76, Marina Lakhman '95, and Sharon Smith, as well as the editors and contributing editors of this magazine.

J Porter originally suggested in 1989 that we do our own version of Yankee's special issue on "New England's Gifts to the World." The idea was not a gift from the Yankee editors; it was stolen outright. We thank them nonetheless.
