This fall's '5O minireunion in Hanover will be on the weekend of October 18-20. You'll have had a mailing on it by the time you read this, but this is a reminder. The highlights are a Friday evening get-together with the class of '49 at the DOC House on Occum Pond and a dinner at the Dowd Country Inn in Lyme on Saturday, plus the class meeting, the football game, and various other events. Come on up!
At this year's Dartmouth Commencement, George Woodwell was recognized for his work in conservation and ecology and was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree. George is the founder and president of the Woods Hole (Mass.) Research Center as well as founding trustee of the Environmental Defense Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the World Resources Institute. He is the third member of the class to be recognized with an honorary degree. Speaking of honors, at the Class Officers Weekend in May we received an award which read in part, "Year in and year out, the class of 1950 has distinguished itself as a Dartmouth leader...indeed a jewel in Dartmouth's crown, a very special treasure that continues to give the College is luster. Dartmouth is honored again to award this remarkable class its 1996 Honorable Mention Award for all it has done and continues to do for the College." Good going, guys and gals!
A note from Ray Head tells us that he was a delegate to the recent Republican national convention in San Diego. Particularly interesting was his report that he served with two other '50s, Dave Luce and Lee Sarokin, on the platform-writing committee.
A few years ago this very month I was wandering around the campus in a new freshman beanie and old remnants of a Marine Corps uniform. Doesn't seem quite like yesterday. But half a century? Nah.
Repeat of an earlier plea: Let me know if you have a grandchild in the freshman class of 2000, or know of another classmate who does. They will graduate on the same weekend we celebrate our 50th Reunion and, as I've mentioned before, we want to form some special bonds with that class.
Think about coming to Hanover for the October mini.
