Speed Racer

Charles Nearburg '72, Th'74 ran through die S's with the Thayer School's first entry in the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Competition in Pontiac, Michigan, this spring. The professional racer—who has competed since 1973 in such events as the Toyota Formula Atlantic Championship Series, the final stepping-stone to Indy car racing enjoyed the ride. "It was a professional job the engine gave a lot of power and the injection system was very responsive," said Nearburg. A former member of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers, Nearburg spent three days on the track, talking design and diesel with the team of Thayer students and undergrads that built the car. It pulled ahead of the field of 91, earning the team top honors for "Outstanding Teamwork" and an honorable mention for electrical work. The little beauty has since returned to Hanover to tear around the Thompson Arena parking lot.
