The elimination of grades and substitution of the simple classifications of "pass" and "fail" in the required course in Physical Education will be inaugurated next fall with the class of 1938, it was announced recently by E. Gordon Bill, dean of the faculty. At the same time it was announced that the semester credit hour for this course and for the satisfactory completion of the freshman year of recreational activities will no longer be granted, starting with next fall's entering class. Both changes, previously approved by the Department of Physical Education, were adopted by the facutly at their April meeting.

Under the revised system, members of the class of 1938 will need 120 semester hours to graduate instead of 122, which is the present requirement. The number of required points for graduation will remain at 220, which means that the general scholastic average necessary for graduation will be raised slightly from 1.818 to 1.833. At the present time, Dartmouth is one of the few major institutions in the East granting academic credit for recreational work.
