Chris Balish '88 hoisted sails, scrubbed the deck, and peeled potatoes as one of the seven members of Crew USA sailing from Italy to Palma in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race last July. He joined the Polish crew of the Dar Mlodziezy in the competition designed to foster international goodwill. Balish has been sailing since he was ten, and was selected for the week-long race based on his essay about how it will affect his life. "The races will help me expand my understanding of other cultures and rekindle my love of the sea," he wrote. "And, most importantly, the races will stir the imaginations of the third-grade inner-city schoolchildren I am mentoring."
