History professor Kenneth Shewmaker won this year's Dartmouth Distinguished Teacher award. The J. Kenneth Huntington Memorial Award for teaching went to Frank Magilligan in the geography department, and the Dartmouth Award for Outstanding Achievement in Creative or ScholarlyWork went this year to two members of the studio art department, LouiseHamlin and ColleenRandall.
Professors MarianneHirsch and Leo Spitzer will become the faculty associates for the new Wheelock Cluster of dormitories this coming year. They will help to inaugurate a move to encourage greater interaction between students and faculty at Dartmouth.
Eight faculty members retired this year: MeredithClement (economics), FaithDunne (education), WernerHoffineister (German), Vincent Malmstrom (geography), Robert S.okol (sociology), Stan Udy (sociology), Charles Wood (history), and Varujan Boghosian (studio art). This fall the College will celebrate Boghosian's career with a catalogue and joint exhibition of his work at the Hood Museum of Art and the Jaffe-Friede & Strauss galleries.
An update on emeritus faculty: Walter Stockmayer, the Albert W. Smith Professor of Chemistry Emeritus, received an honorary D.Sc. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. BobHuke '48 (geography) has just completed a book on Myanmar to be published by the American Geographical Society. He continues to spend the winter months at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. This past winter he led a Dartmouth alumni tour to India. HenryTerrie (English) spends his winters in Charleston, South Carolina, where he teaches a seminar. This year's was on Hawthorne James, and Faulkner.
