Did you know that participation of alumnae in the Dartmouth Alumni Fund is higher than male participation in 17 of 21 coed classes? (Couldn't resist printing this.)

In May The Providence Journal published an article featuring Terrell Davis, the Denver Broncos' star running back, and our very own Dr. Thomas Ward on the subject of migraine headaches.

Terrell was in Boston to discuss his history of migraines and their treatment during his appearance in a seminar on migraines at the Copley Marriott. Davis, who was named MVP in Denver's Super Bowl victory over Green Bay, sat out most of the second quarter of die championship game as the result of a migraine. Davis used medication a headache-reducing nasal spray manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals and was able to return to the game in the second half.

Dr. Thomas Ward, director of the headache clinic at Hitchcock, said diet and hormonal changes, stress, and lack of sleep may trigger migraines. "Unfortunately, we don't know the precise causes of migraines, but those who suffer the illness experience painful and often disabling symptoms." Ward said untreated migraines can last from four to 72 hours, during which most sufferers become withdrawn, irritable, and pessimistic.

More than 60 percent of migraine sufferers are in denial. Employees who suffer migraines miss an average of 4.3 workdays a year, costing companies an estimated $17 billion in lost productivity.

Davis is trying to raise national awareness of the impact and treatment of migraines through the Terrell Davis Migraine Foundation. If any classmates suffer from migraines, I hope this news has been helpful to you.
