Professor George Demko of the geography department has received a Jubilee Gold Medal awarded by Charles University of Prague in the Czech Republic on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of its founding. The honor recognized Demko's lifetime contribution to geographic knowledge and his efforts over 35 years to promote international understanding and cooperation despite ideological barriers. He was Geographerofthe U.S. Department of State from 1982-1989.
