When economist Jack Menge first set foot in a Dartmouth classroom, the Dow Jones average stood at just over 500 and the minimum wage was a buck an hour. College tuition was only $900.
That was 1956. Today, 44 years later, Menge is the College's senior faculty member. The professor, who has taught everything from Econ 01, "The Price System," to Econ 48, "Topics in Public Finance," sums ups his feelings about seniority by quoting from a gravestone: "I knew this would happen, but not so soon." Above, a look at the 11 professors who've been here the longest (providing 408 combined years of service to Dartmouth).
