In 1972, a new era dawned at Dartmouth. With the appointment of Agnes Bixler as assistant director of physical education, women's athletics got under way with five teams: field hockey squash, basketball, tennis and lacrosse. Today women's sports have grown to include 17 varsity teams, 13 club sports and more than 600 athletes, including those shown here. "I think women's athletics in general will continue to grow," says basketball guard Sam Berdinka '01. "Doing things that are physically challenging is a lot different from doing things that are mentally challenging," adds field hockey player Jillian Joyce '01 "I like that balance."
