Hello,'05s. Happy holidays! As I write this I'm sitting next to my Christmas tree in sunny California and thinking how much I miss the snow and cold of New Hampshire! I have a lot of news for you this month, so I'll get right into it!
Congratulations to Matt Bell! He just got engaged to Katherine Brill 06. Matt is currently at Dartmouth finishing a Ph.D. in computer science and the pair plans to wed after he's finished his degree.
Tiffany Davis wrote in to say that she's been living in Atlanta, Georgia, since graduation and has just purchased her first home (a loft in the downtown area). She's in her second year of a Ph.D. program in sociology at Emory and is looking forward to becoming a professor and performing her own research in the future.
Min Zhang just moved from New York to Los Angeles this fall to work as an asset manager. If you live in the L.A. area be sure to blitz Min and help her get acquainted with the city!
Also recently relocated is Lucas Nikkei. After graduation, Lucas taught two years of eighth-grade science in North Carolina with Teach for America. Now he is at Penn State starting medical school and is "happy to be on the other side of the classroom for a while." Congratulations, Lucas—best of luck!
Mary Bell graduated from Mills College with her M.F.A. and moved to Brooklyn, where she is now living with Hannah Chase '06 and Mark Orsini '04. She works at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with Kate Boies.
She also writes of Mikhail Akulov, who is in his second year of a Ph.D. program in Russian history at Harvard.
Olivia Nunez has a big update! She has a new job that she loves—she "started working for the GO Project (located in lower Manhattan) in mid September." She explains that "the GO Project offers educational assistance and social service programs to under-performing and under-served children and their families in lower Manhattan."
Also, on December 9 she ran a 10K in honor of her friend Christi Thomas, who died last September of neuroblastoma at the age of 9. Funds from the 10K go to the Christi Thomas Memorial Fund and the Kids Cancer Crusade. Olivia says, "I've accepted and even embraced the fact that I will be last since this is a race for professional runners."
Rory Gawler is back in school, studying for a master's in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He says he's "loving it!" He recommends it if you're interested in education or social issues and says, "Those who knew me at Dartmouth would be surprised at how engaged I am in my classroom learning and homework studying."
Thanks for all of the updates, everyone! Please keep them coming in the New Year! I'm going to send out some more solicitation emails since I see no reason why we shouldn't fill our word limit in every issue!
Have a terrific New Year—I can't wait to hear all about it.
