Greetings everyone! Chris Downie and his wife, Kathleen, are proud to announce the birth of their daughter Hayden Welles Downie. Hayden arrived on January 28 weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces. This is Chris and Kathleens first baby and, needless to say, they are enjoying parenthood tremendously. Chris and Kathleen still live in Rumson, New Jersey. Chris works in N.Y.C. as president and CFO of a telecommunications company. His e-mail is cdownie@telx.com.

I am also pleased to report that Jack Cabaness was married to Emma Edwards in a small family ceremony on February 23. Jack and Emma live in Craftsbury, Vermont, where Jack serves as the pastor of the East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church. He also does some adjunct teaching at nearby Sterling College. They are planning a summer wedding celebration in August.

Anda Kuo wrote with an update as well. She directs an innovative pediatric residency program began in 2004 called Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved (PLUS) at the University of California San Francisco. The mission of the program is to inspire and train future leaders in pediatrics to identify and address the varied issues that impact the health of vulnerable children. Program graduates work to positively impact the health of vulnerable children, leading change through policy, research, nonprofits and government. The novel aspect of the PLUS program is the incorporation of leadership training into the core of medical education. Anda said her experience with PLUS gives her the opportunity to think about her Dartmouth classmates who pursued careers in the business sector; she feels physicians have a lot to learn from the training that business leaders receive. Anda noted that physician leadership training occurs, at best, mid-career or at the executive level, but given the state of health care in this country, it is clear that physicians sorely need leadership training as a basic skill and earlier on in training. Anda said the number of applicants she receives for their very select spots indicates that future physicians also seek the skills to be more effective leaders. Anyone who wishes to contact Anda about her important work can e-mail her at akuo@sfghpeds.ucsf.edu.
