“I do autopsies of dead stars not in Hollywood,” says astronomy professor Robert Fesen, who grabbed this shot of supernova Cassiopeia A using the Hubble Space Telescope. Winning control of the Hubble requires patience: only one of every eight astronomers’ proposals is chosen. Fesen has hopes to direct Hubble several more times before the orbiting image-maker goes dark in 2014.
