Phil Hanlon ’77 has described the presidency of Dartmouth as his dream job. At his inauguration September 20 he recalled childhood dreams of another kind, those of hoisting the Stanley Cup as a National Hockey League champion. The Wentworth Bowl, which passes from president to president, reminded Hanlon of his hockey dreams. “And I can say to all of you that the Wentworth Bowl trumps the Stanley Cup every day of the week,” he said. Former presidents Jim Kim and Jim Wright were on the Green to hear the College’s 18th president deliver a 28-minute speech in which he committed to “keeping Dartmouth at the very forefront in teaching and learning.” He also announced the creation of a society of fellows program and an innovation center and new venture incubator for the College. Nearly 3,000 people attended the event, which doubled as Convocation for the class of 2017.
