How many class secretaries does it take to get a place really spotless?

hen Class Secretary Albert Henning '77 told '47 correspondent Ham Chase that he wanted a clean room, Ham did a lot more than sweep the floor. What Al, an assistant professor at Thayer School, needed was a contaminant-free, solidstate lab for research and teaching in the fabrication and physics of microelectronic and micromechanical devices. Ham's company, Clean Way Industries, specializes in general contracting on clean rooms, and just happens to be located in nottoo-distant Keene.

Following Al's specifications, Ham designed a lab with spaces that have fewer than 100 particles bigger than.s microns per cubic foot floating around. (Ahumanhairis 100 microns in diameter.) The room is used for assembly of transistors and hightemperature superconducting devices, and for collaborations with such companies as IBM and Analog Devices.

Al Henning '77 called on fellow scribe HamChase '47 to build this contaminant-free lab.
