During Club Officers and Affiliated Groups Weekend (CAGOW) on January 22-24 in Hanover recognition was given for the best performance in the following categories: small club, Dartmouth Club of Hawaii; medium club, Dartmouth Club of Pioneer Valley (Massachusetts); large club, Dartmouth Club of the Midwest (Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota); metro club, Dartmouth Club of Los Angeles; group, Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association; club president, Barbara Rollins ’84 (past president of the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C.); group leader, Brendan Connell ’87 and Melanie Pastuck ’11 (president and vice president of the Dartmouth Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Alumni/ae Association). The Communities Executive Council (CEC) is a group of 30 club and group leaders that works with alumni relations to provide support for our alumni clubs and groups. The CEC has been instrumental in onboarding new volunteers, enhancing collaborations between alumni organizations, developing operating guidelines and planning CAGOW. Congratulations to the following leaders—confirmed at CAGOW—who will be in new roles on, or joining, the CEC: president, Hugh O’Reilly ’86 (treasurer of the Dartmouth Club of Greater Boston); vice president, Charles Allison ’78 (vice president of the Dartmouth Club of New York); new representatives (who serve three-year terms), Barbara Rollins ’84 (past president of the Washington, D.C., club), Ken Miller ’84 (president of the Dartmouth Club of Alaska), Kenji Hosokawa ’98 (president of the Dartmouth Club of Japan) and Vanessa Ferro ’00 (president of the Dartmouth Club of South Florida).
Sidney Goldman ’60, president of the Dartmouth Club of the Florida Keys, reports that on December 10 the Dodecaphonics wowed the crowded Carper Auditorium of the Tropic Cinema in Key West, Florida, with a varied selection of a cappella renditions that included melodies not usually associated with that style. The Dodecs members included 15 talented and multifaceted young men and women from all parts of the country. They fully enjoyed their visit to the Keys and the celebratory brunch at the Blue Heaven restaurant in Key West. Sid writes that visits from Dartmouth entities foster recognition of our College and encourage young people in the Florida Keys to consider applying to out-of-state colleges such as Dartmouth.
Among the Dartmouth ambassadors who annually visit our club areas are the sports teams that compete at away games with local colleges and universities. The Dartmouth Club of Eastern New York was proud to support the Dartmouth men’s and women’s ice hockey teams, which played Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on the weekends of December 4-5 and February 12-13, respectively. Club president Jerry Dollar ’74 organized a gathering at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy, New York, before the men’s game against RPI on December 4. Among the alumni, team parents and guests who turned out for these great games were Jerry Dollar, Bob Lobel ’83, Cait Brennan Navarro ’92, Mary Frances Sabo ’86, Bob Conway ’73, Stephen Wilson ’55, Lyon Greenberg ’54, Bruce Barach ’78 and Gabi Sarhos ’86.
On February 7 in Arlington, Virginia, the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C., conducted its “supersession” interviewing day that brought together alumni interviewers, candidates and district enrollment directors (DEDs) from the District of Columbia, the Maryland suburbs and northern Virginia to complete all assigned interviews in one day. Organizers of this efficient event were DEDs David Hawkins ’99, Abner Oakes ’81, John Mott ’81, Trina Santry ’80, Tu’87, and Jean Downey Wulff ’88. The D.C. club’s recent community service projects included a cleanup event at Arlington National Cemetery on February 13 organized by Tom Duke ’81. Thousands of wreaths laid on the graves of deceased veterans last December at the annual Wreaths Across America service event were collected and disposed of. The club’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day service project was conducted on January 18 at the Church of the Epiphany in Washington, D.C., where alumni and family members donated winter coats, prepared lunch, played board games and socialized with hungry and homeless clients of the church’s food kitchen. Bob Davidson ’67 was the event’s organizer. Leadership transitions for the club include Kevin Hudak ’97, who takes over as president; Rose Wang ’14 as treasurer; Will Baird ’15 as membership chair; along with new board members Paul Lim ’96 and Renee Scott ’13. Stepping down after years of service are Wayne Bardsley ’70 as book awards chair, Dave Miller ’97 as treasurer, Julie Mannes ’86 as membership chair, Ashley Afrani-Sakyi ’12 as community service chair and Amit Malhotra ’90 as newsletter editor.
May 7 is the annual Alumni Day of Service. Please send me reports of your club’s or group’s service project.
