Trails to Close
The removal of dead and diseased trees in Pine Park forced the closure of several trails this winter for several weeks. “It just wouldn’t be safe in there with that amount of dead standing timber,” explains N.H. forest health coordinator Kyle Lombard. The logging operation is “definitely going to change the character of the park,” says Tim McNamara ’78, associate director of the College’s facilities office.
Candidates Named
Alumni Council has nominated two candidates for positions on the board of trustees. In June Hilary Tompkins ’90 and Daniel Black ’82 are expected to join the board. Tompkins, a former solicitor for the U.S. Department of the Interior (and DAM cover subject), is a partner at Hogan Lovells in Washington, D.C. Black is managing partner of the Wicks Group, a private equity firm in New York City.
There Goes the Neighborhood
The Dartmouth Bookstore and Wheelock Books both closed prior to the start of winter term, leaving the town and campus with no opportunities to buy new books. One local writer described downtown as now being “intellectually barren and boring in the extreme.” The Dartmouth Bookstore had been in operation for more than 140 years.
Final Summit
Former Outing Club director and accomplished mountain climber Andy Harvard ’71 died in January following a 10-year battle with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease. He was diagnosed after the College fired him for erratic behavior later believed by many to be due to his illness. Harvard’s family lost a protracted and disheartening legal battle with the College after Dartmouth denied him disability payments.
