Clarence Howland, class of 1884 (with ball), started the Dartmouth Rugby Foot-Ball Association in 1880. Several years passed before the game earned “moral and financial support,” according to The Dartmonth Literary Monthly, “on account of the almost inevitable roughness of the game.”
