The Classes

1945-1958

At the end of the last class column I promised I would update you on the Dartmouth ski team and the NCAA championships at Oak Hill. Dartmouth came in third behind Utah and Colorado. The point totals were 590 for Utah, 513 for Colorado, and 508 for Dartmouth. All the other teams were in the 300s and below, which speaks to the depth and talent ofthe Dartmouth skiers. It was an exciting weekend, with the entire community turning out to cheer these extraordinary scholar-athletes. When the season ended Nordic coach Brayton Osgood ’03 was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association Coach ofthe Year. This spring the Dartmouth equestrian team won its first ever National Collegiate Equestrian Association single-discipline championship. Incredibly impressive performances by both teams!

The College recently learned ofthe passing of Bernard Lieberman. Bernie came to Dartmouth from Waterbury, Connecticut. His studies were interrupted by the war. After his return and graduation, Bernie earned an M.B.A. at Temple University. Camping and hiking with his family and friends was one of his great pleasures, as was sharing his love of music. He participated in the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra and the Handel Society during his years in Hanover. He was also known for being quite a dancer and for his ability to get the party going at his Springmoor home in Raleigh, North Carolina.

As we all know, this is a challenging time for college presidents across the country. On the Dartmouth College website, under “Office of the President,” you can stay up to date on President Beilock’s communications. I want to end this column with words from her letter of April 24: “As I said when I spoke about the importance of academic freedom last month, even in times of uncertainty—especially in times of uncertainty— we must not waver in our commitment to one another or to the values of free and open inquiry that are integral to American higher education.”
