World-renowned mathematical biologist Santiago Schnell, who previously served as dean at Notre Dame’s College of Science, starts July 1 as provost of the College. Schnell, who grew up in Caracas, Venezuela, earned his doctorate at Oxford University and describes himself as a proponent of the “unity of knowledge,” the idea that all disciplines can provide important perspective on any problem. He also joins the faculty of the mathematics department and Geisei School of Medicine. “Santiago is a brilliant, multidisciplinary scientist, a humanistic and humane thinker, and a talented administrator with deep experience of what it takes to lead a world-class research university,” says President Sian Beilock.
