Dr. Edwin Porter died at his home in Northfield, Vt., March 19, 1908, of pneumonia, The son of Dr. Benjamin and Sophia (Fullerton) Porter, he was born in Northfield, April 24, 1826. He graduated from Kimball Union Academy in 1846, and from the University of Vermont in 1850. After completing his medical studies he settled in practice in his native town, succeeding gradually to his father's practice as the latter relinquished it, and continuing until a few weeks before his death. The practice of father and son thus covered a period of ninety-two years in the same town. He also conducted a drug store for more than forty years. He was a close student and a successful practitioner, and maintained his interest in the most modern medical discoveries. He was an attendant and liberal supporter of the Congregational church, and a trustee of Norwich University. He had pronounced financial ability, which is evidenced by the fact that his estate is estimated at $250,000. In 1867 he was married to Caroline Sophronia, daughter of Heman Carpenter of Northfield, who died in 1891. They had no children.
