Dr. Charles Cogswell Hayes died November 6, 1910, in Lincoln, Neb., at the home of his son, S. Mills Hayes. He was born at Soutli Berwick, Maine, January 14, 1823, being the son of Hon. William Allen and Susao (Lord) Hayes. He prepare'd for college at Abingtdn, Mass. After graduation he studied medicine, and obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1852. After a year's hospital experience in Boston, he studied abroad for nearly three years. On returning to America, he entered upon practice in the city of New York, but after two years moved to Madison, Wis. August 16, 1864, he was commissioned assistant surgeon of the Forty-third Wisconsin Volunteers, promoted to surgeon, March 16, 1865, and mustered out in the following June. In November, 1866, he removed to Hyde Park, Mass., where the remainder of his active life was spent. November 23, 1859, he was married to Florence E., daughter of Governor Simeon Mills of Madison, who died September 28, 1890. They had two sons, the younger of whom died in infancy.
