VALUABLE GIFTS TO THE LIBRARY

By the gift of Miss Margaret H. Jewell and Mrs. George P. Sanger of Boston, the College Library comes into possession of fifty-four volumes of the records of the Court of Commissioners of Alabama Claims. These volumes form a complete set of the publications of the court of the first commission, issued in 1874-76. Since perfect files of this series are extremely rare, the library is to be considered fortunate indeed to possess them. The volumes presented were formerly the property of the donors' father, Judge Harvey Jewell '44, who was a member of the first commission from 1875 to 1877.

Another gift of much interest is a letter presented by Mr. W. Havemeyer of New York City, to whose generosity the College Library has several times been a grateful debtor for valuable documents. The letter recently acquired was written from Hanover in 1774 by Levi Frisbie, of the class of 1771 — the first class to be graduated from the College. Frisbie at the time of writing was engaged in missionary work among the Canadian Indians, and the information contained in his letter is of considerable historic interest. The complete text of this letter is to be published in a later issue of THE MAGAZINE.
