In the days of the Civil War no direct connection between the government and the colleges existed to quicken the military spirit or increase the sense of cooperation of the students. Initiative was entirely individual and the organizations that resulted are an interesting reflection of the College attitude. With the European War now fast becoming history and the Students' Army Training Corps already a memory it is of interest to compare the recent military activities of the College with its earlier manifestations.

Four organizations stand out with especial prominence in the days of the Civil War. They are mentioned in chronological order as two of them originated before the actual outbreak of war:
