THE 1960 Alumni Fund Campaign was steaming full speed ahead as the final month of activity approached. A late May report showed just over $300,000 on hand from some 5,000 contributors toward the 1960 goal of $1,000,000.
Although Fund officials were frank to admit that the dollar total was running somewhat behind schedule to reach the million dollar goal, they were still optimistic as June is traditionally the "big" month for the Fund.
Two more Fund mailings are scheduled - the first, featuring a message by President Dickey, to be sent out in late May, and the second, a final reminder envelope, scheduled to go out in mid-June.
A recent study shows that to date threequarters of all 1960 Fund gifts have come from alumni who participated in the Capital Gifts Campaign and nearly one-third of all gifts are from men who are still making payments on pledges to the Capital Campaign. Chairman Donald F. Saw-yer '21 termed this "heartening evidence of the place the Alumni Fund holds in the affections of Dartmouth men" but went on to express his hope that the 8,000 alumni who did not participate in the Capital Campaign will want to help support Dartmouth's programs and progress through annual gifts to the Alumni Fund.
Special impetus was given to the 1960 effort when 38 head class agents met in Hanover in May to discuss plans for the balance of the campaign. Special class mailings, greater activity by all class agents, and solicitation of special prospects were among the items discussed by the head agents.
Dartmouth parents, under the chairmanship of Guilford Hartley of Duluth, Minn., have thus far made 500 gifts totaling $15,000 in their campaign effort for the Alumni Fund.
The deadline for contributions to the 1960 Alumni Fund is June 30, and final figures on the results will be reported in late July.
