The first grant ever made by the National Research Council to a negro scientist has been awarded to Dr. E. E. Just of the Department of Zoology and Physiology of Howard University. Dr. Just is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, prepared for college at Kimball Union Academy and graduated from Dartmouth in 1907, where he specialized in the various branches of biology.
