JOHN L. SULLIVAN '21 of Washington, D. C., and Manchester, N. H., former Secretary of the Navy, was elected President of the Dartmouth Alumni Council at the annual June meeting in Hanover on June 15-16. He succeeds Sidney J. Flanigan '23 of New York City, who presided over the sessions held in conjunction with the second weekend of alumni reunions.
Robert C. Borwell '25 of Chicago was elected vice president of the Council and Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover was reelected secretary. Two new members-at-large, to serve for three years, are Orton H. Hicks '21 of Great Neck, N. Y„ chairman of the Council's Special Committee on Dartmouth Movies, and Charles J. Zimmerman '23 of Hartford, Conn., who was reelected chairman of the Alumni Fund Committee. Norman W. Crisp '21 of Nashua, N. H„ was elected a member of the Dartmouth Athletic Council for another three-year term, and Robert W. Mitchell '32 of Rutland, Vt„ was continued as the alumni representative on the Board of Proprietors of The Dartmouth.
The Alumni Council's executive committee during 1950-51 will include Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Borwell, Mr. Hayward, Charles B. Rice '23 of Hartford, Conn., and William H. Morton '32 of New York City.
COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN NAMED
To serve as chairmen of the standing committees of the Council, the following were named: Admissions and Schools, Justin A. Stanley '33, Chicago; Alumni Club Activities, Donald G. Following committee meetings on Thursday evening and Friday morning, the first full meeting of the Council was held in Sanborn English House on Friday morning with 26 present members and 12 past members of the Council in attendance. Also present were six men who were to become members of the Council on July 1.
This first session was devoted to committee reports; informal talks by William H. McCarter '19, director of athletics, and Albert I. Dickerson '30, director of admissions; and a report by H. Clifford Bean '16, chairman of the Special Committee on Enrollment. Following luncheon at the Outing Club House, the Council heard President Dickey discuss the current and long-range financial problems of the College. Sigurd S. Larmon '14, Trustee of the College and chairman of the Dartmouth Development Council, spoke on the organization, accomplishments and future plans of the Development Council; and Orton H. Hicks '21 presented an interim report for the Special Committee on Dartmouth Movies. This committee was continued for further study and will present a final report at the next Alumni Council meeting, January 19-20.
