It is of interest occasionally to know who arte the senior members of our alumni body. This has just been determined in the Office of Alumni Records and the results are given here for the' general interest that they will have among the alumni at large.
The oldest alumnus is Leander M. Nute '54. Mr. Nute was born in Milton, New Hampshire, April 16, 1831. He has achieved considerable reputation in later years as a maker of violins, although he has been interested in other business activities during his life. Although the sole survivor of his class he is its official secretary and maintains a very warm interest in the activities of the Secretaries' Association. His address is 138 Pine street, Portland, Maine.
The next in order of age is Samuel H. Jackman of the class of 1860. Mr. Jackman was born at Enfield, New Hampshire, June 20, 1831. He is a teacher and was one of the early settlers in California, going overland from Illinois in 1861 and being wounded in a skirmish with the Indians while crossing Utah. In a recent letter to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE Mr. Jackman writes: "My first Presidential vote was cast in New Hampshire in 1852 for Franklin Pierce, a New Hampshire man, and my last or twentieth vote was cast .day before yesterday here in California for Calvin Coolidge, a Vermont man for in early days Vermont tried to claim the part of New Hampshire where I was born and received my early education so I must retaliate by voting for Ver- mont now."
Mr. Jackman is now retired and lives at 2819 East street, Sacramento, California.
Next in point of age is John H. Waterman of the class of 1857 who was born at Washington, Pennsylvania, October 20, 1831. After teaching for a year he studied theology and was ordained in the Protestant Episcopal church in which he has served in various parishes. His present address is 43 Kearney avenue, Fresno, California.
The next in years is John W. Hayley of the class of 1860. Mr. Hayley was born at Tuftonboro, New Hampshire, June 8, 1834. After teaching for a year he studied at the Andover Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1864. He was for a period Professor of Logic and Metaphysics at the Union Christian College in Merom, Indiana, but later accepted pastorates in various places. His present address is Centre Tuftonboro, New Hampshire.
The fifth in age is Albert J. Hersey of the class of 1859. Mr. Hersey was born at Tuftonboro, New Hampshire, on March 3, 1835. He was successively a lawyer, a teacher, and a farmer. During the Civil War he was captain of the 16th New Hampshire Volunteers. His present address is Manchester, lowa.
