CHANGE IN ORGANIZATION OF CITIZENSHIP COURSE

Prof. L. D. Stilwell formerly an assistant professor of history, has been appointed director of the Citizenship Department to take the place of Prof. H. B. Crothers, who resigned the position last spring to accept the directorship of the department of history in the University of Maryland.

R. E. Riegel, secretary of the citizenship course for the last three years, has been promoted to assistant professor and will be the assistant director of the course. R. A. McKennan '25 has accepted the position of instructor in the department.

The old system of each social science: history, political science, economics and sociology, contributing one instructor for a semester each year has been abandoned. The staff named above will form a permanent Citizenship Department.

The work this year will be done through the study of a series on various citizenship problems together with the Baker-Crothers textbook. Half the semester will be devoted to library readings.

A system of conferences has been planned for men of high standing. Students doing exceptional work in the subject will be referred to outside reading books which they will read and discuss with their instructor.

Because of the small number of instructors comprising the staff, half of those taking the course will have classes in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. Last year when there was no permanent staff, all citizenship classes were in the afternoon.

The following subjects will be studied during the year: "Race," "Industry," "War and Peace," "Government," "Family," and "Education." The last three subjects were not taken up last year.
