A TRIENNIAL CATALOGUE OF THE FORTIES
April, 1925

The MAGAZINE is indebted to Henry K. Urion '12 for the letter printed herewith giving information concerning the publication of one of the early General Catalogues of the College. It is of particular interest at this time when the new edition of the Catalogue is under preparation as indicating the scope of the earlier volume. The letter was written to Henry M. Kimball '55, grandfather of Mr. Urion, by his brother Buchanan Kimball. The father of the two men was living in Hanover publishing a newspaper and running a town printing office in which Buchanan Kimball was working when the following letter, most of which is here quoted, was written: Hanover, Nov. 30, 1846. My Dear Brother,

Our work here has been driving part of the time. We have had this fall, the Dartmouth Catalogue 5000 copies, Norwich University, 2000, Black River Academy at Ludlow, 1500. Thetford Academy, 1500, Caledonia County Grammar School at Peacham, 700 one of the same name at Lyndon, 400, & Chelsea Select School 200, making 11,300 in all. During the summer we had the College Triennal Catalogue, 92 pages, 1500 copies, which contains the names of all the Presidents, Trustees, Treasurers, Professors, Tutors, Preceptors of Moor's Charity School, Graduates, Medical Graduates, & those who have had degrees conferred upon them since the foundation of the College, in 1769. All ministers are in Italic, distinguished men in small capitals, and among the Graduates, & Medical Graduates those who are deceased have a * put against their names. We had quite a number of * to put in. How do they get along with the railroad? How far have they got the rail laid? When will they have it open to Franklin? I talk of going down to Franklin when the railroad is opened. The papers say that it will be opened to Franklin by the 15th of Dec. but Father thinks it doubtful. I expect you to write me particularly what day the railroad will be opened if you can find out so as to make my calculations for going. I think now of going the third week in Dec. I want to ride in the cars the first time they run if I can. Your affectionate brother, Buchanan.
