A long article in the Manchester Union of February 18 begins as follows: "Distinguished jurists of the state Supreme and Superior Courts joined with members of the Hillsboro County bar in paying tribute to Clerk Thomas D. Luce, beloved officer of the court, at a spontaneous gathering at The Carpenter last night. The veteran clerk, idolized by members of bench and bar alike, was showered with felicitations at a complimentary banquet, and during the evening was presented a chest of gold, a gold chain, and a large basket of American Beauty roses. Taken entirely by surprise, Clerk Luce, who is also president of the state bar association, was astonished to behold one of the largest gatherings of the members of the bar ever held in New Hampshire, prepared to do him honor, when he visited the hotel last evening after six o'clock, in company with Chief Justice Oliver W. ,Branch of the Superior Court. For nearly four hours, the veteran 'Chancellor', who has endeared himself to his associates in the profession since he entered upon his duties in 1887, listened to his praises from the lips of Chief Justice Robert J. Peaslee of the Supreme Court, former Chief Justice Frank N. Parsons of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Oliver W. Branch of the Superior Court, Justice William H. Sawyer of the Supreme Court, Major James F. Brennan of Peterboro, and Jeremiah J. Doyle of Nashua."
