Three Spaulding pool marks and two Dartmouth records were lowered in the Spaulding Pool, Jan. 16 when the Dartmouth Swimming Team, in its first meet of the season, scored a victory over the team representing the New York Athletic Club. The score of the meet was 38 to 24. This score does not reveal the closeness of the meet which was decided by the relay race, the last event on the program. This race which counts 8 points for the winners and none for the losers is the determining factor of many meets. In the events preceding it Dartmouth scored 30 points to the 24 for the New York team.
Bryant, a freshman at Dartmouth, was directly responsible for most of the record-breaking during the course of the afternoon. In the 50 yard race which opened the program, though he got a poor start and was left standing after the other racers had entered the water, Bryant swam the distance in 25 2-10 seconds, equalling the pool record for the event and taking 4-10 of a second from the Dartmouth record. Bryant again starred in the 100 yard race in which "his time of 55 3-10 seconds, clipped 1 1-10 seconds from the pool record and also established a new college record. Bryant also swam as anchor man on the 200 yard relay team whose time of 1 minute 42 7-10 seconds set a new pool and college record and equalled the N. E. I. S A. record held by Brown.
Michael, who won the diving contest for Dartmouth, and McCaw, who scored second place in the back-stroke event are also freshmen. The former, who was named among the outstanding scholastic fancy divers, prepared at Mercersburg Academy. McCaw, swam last year for the Shaw High School team, of Cleveland. Bryant, for two years captain of the Andover team, was named on the Ail-American Interscholastic team for both the 50 and 100 yard events. The summary:
