SCHOLASTIC CASUALTIES LARGE THIS YEAR

The total number of men who have come under the disciplinary action of the dean's offices on account of poor scholastic standing for the last semester amounted to 260, the first time during the past five years that the total figure has passed the 200 mark. This figure is due somewhat to the recent ruling which places on probation students who fail to meet a minimum point requirement, although passing in four studies. This total of 260 students is 70 more than the highest single total for any one first semester during that period. One hundred and eighty-nine were either separated or placed on probation at the end of the first ranking period of 1924.

There were also more sophomores separated from college this past semester than have been dropped at any one corresponding time for the past five years. The sophomore class had more men placed on probation than any other class in recent times. Of the 1928 men left on the campus, approximately one in every five is under the probation ban. Taken altogether, the class of 1928 had one of the poorest scholastic records in the recent history of the College.

The juniors also slumped with 37 men being placed on probation, more than double the number for any previous first semester for a fiveyear period.

The class of 1929 had the fewest men separated from the freshman class in recent years. The number of men who enter Dartmouth in the fall as freshmen and who' are dropped at the end of the mid-year examination period has been steadily decreasing during the past five first semesters. The proportion of freshmen spearated this year so far has probably been one of the lowest in the annals of the College. Comparative statistics of the men separated from College and on probation for the first semester for the past four years are as follows : 1923 1924 Sep. Pro. Sep. Pro.
