Enlarged Football Stands
MAY 1968

In the report of the Alumni Council's Special Committee on Alumni Relations, summarized in this issue, the College was reminded that a steadily increasing number of alumni will be returning to Hanover in the years ahead and that this should be taken into account in the planning of new facilities.

Good news to the committee and to the alumni in general is the start of construction on permanent stands on the east side of Memorial Field, which will increase the capacity of the football stadium from 15,000 to 21,000 persons. The expansion is scheduled to be completed in time for the 1968 season.

The new stands are a component of the Third Century Fund campaign, and immediate construction has been made possible by early gifts for that purpose. Overall cost is estimated at $375,000. Planned facilities under the new stands - squash and handball courts - will be built later.

The permanent steel and wood stands on the east side of the field will seat 9000, compared with the 3000 capacity of the temporary structure that has been there for many years. The Hussey Manufacturing Company of North Berwick, Maine, is doing the building.

Because of the construction activities on Memorial Field, Dartmouth's home baseball games this spring are being played on Chase Field. The varsity diamond will be returned to its regular location next season.
