The Dartmouth varsity baseball squad suffered three defeats on the annual Spring trip, losing to the U. S. Marine Corps, Georgetown University, and Princeton, while a fourth game with Georgetown was called because of rain.
In the season's opener played against the Marines at Quantico, Virginia, Dartmouth lost 6 to 2 in a game featured by four home runs. Moran and Elliott each made homers in the sixth inning for Dartmouth's only scores.
In the next game, against Georgetown, played at Washington, D. C., Dartmouth was again defeated, this time by a score of 14-6. The second game of the two game series scheduled with Georgetown was called because of rain.
The Green lost to Princeton by the score of 6 to 4 at Princeton in the final game of the annual trip. Dartmouth was leading 3 to 2 in the seventh inning, when Princeton staged a rally, and aided by two errors scored four runs.
In speaking of the showing of the team on the trip. Coach Tesreau said last night, "Although the Spring trip was not very successful, prospects for this year's team are bright. The loss of games was due to the fact that the team had had no outdoor practice before the trip, and many errors were made due to this fact. The outfield played very well on the trip, and Moran showed up well at shortstop."
Holy Cross 3—Dartmouth 0
Dartmouth's baseball season was formally opened at Worcester, April 19, with the customary defeat by Holy Cross. Before a record crowd of 11,000 people the Green batters were held for eight innings hitless by pitcher A 1 Fons, of Holy Cross.
Holy Cross threatened early, filling the bases in the first inning when but one man had been put out, but Van Riper, who was on the mound for the Hanover players, extricated himself from this hole without allowing a run. In the third inning Holy Cross scored when Savage walked, stole second, and came home on a two- base hit by Dobens. Again, in the fifth inning Savage scored, having singled, once more stole second base, and being brought in by a single by Dobens. The last Holy Cross run was scored in the eighth inning on a squeeze play. Dartmouth's only threatening gestures were made in the eighth and ninth innings. In the earlier frame McLaughlin and Owl singled but the former was forced out at the plate. In the final chapter with two men out Norris was hit by Fons and Moran singled, advancing him. The side was retired, however, when McLaughlin, the next batter, struck out.
