Dartmouth's track team easily won both of the meets held during the Spring southern trip, defeating William and Mary 92 to 25 and the strong University of Virginia squad 80½ to The third meet scheduled with Virginia Polytechnic institute was called off because of rain.
Despite the poor weather conditions the first spring track trip proved quite successful inasmuch as it afforded Coach Harry Hillman an opportunity of judging the strength of the Green squad before the Penn meet on May 7. In speaking of the team's prospects Coach Hillman said, "Dartmouth has a good dual meet team, the best in the past five years."
Dartmouth won 12 first places in the 13 events against William and Mary in the first meet held in Williamsburg, Va., on April 4. In the second meet held at Charlottesville, the Green men captured nine firsts to four for the Cavaliers, with the pole vault being tied. A rain soaked track was responsible for the slow times in some of the events in the first meet.
E. M. Wells '28 was the most consistent point winner for the Green. He took four firsts in the two hurdle events in the meets. R. W. Black '29 was close on Wells' heels in all the races and won three seconds and one third. J. C. McAvoy '28 won three firsts and one second in the discus and shotput events. In the meet with University of Virginia, McAvoy was credited with breaking a Dartmouth discus record, but on checking the distance it was found to be short.
In the 100 and 220-yard dashes A. A. Cooley '29 took two firsts against William and Mary and two seconds in the University of Virginia meet. S. H. Martin '27 won the 880-yard run in both meets and the mile against the Cavaliers.
The javelin throw was won by A. R. Gow '2B in the first meet and by R. J. Covert '27 in the second. M. J. Ketz '27 took first in the broad jump both times and W. L. Hetfield '29 placed second and third in the meets. T. L. Maynard '29 and R. C. Herrmann '2B twice tied for first in the high jump. G. Swope, Jr. '29 won the quarter mile run against both the Virginia schools.
The poor weather conditions prevented Captain D. F. McCall '27 and G. Glendinning '28 from running in their special events, although McCall entered the mile and won second against William and Mary. The team was somewhat weakened in the mile by the loss of K. H. Auer '27 who did not go on the trip as he went on his honeymoon after his marriage on March 31.
