Before taking a brief look at the Dartmouth varsity winter teams, it might be well to check the records of other fall teams and mention the freshman football club, which is one of the best in recent years.
The Dartmouth jayvee football team ran into tough sledding, just like their varsity brethren, and came up with a record of three losses and one tie. The jayvees lost to Vermont 38-13, Fort Devens 13-0, and Yale 26-12, but tied Harvard 6-6. The freshman "A" team tied Harvard 13-13, lost to Yale 13-7, and defeated Boston University 12-0 and New Hampshire 59-7. The frosh "B" team won two and lost one, defeating Kimball Union 13-6, losing to Vermont Academy 14-13 and defeating New Hampton 16-0. The '57 cross-country runners won two (20-43 over Boston University, 26-29 over Mt. Hermon) and lost to Harvard 20-33. The freshman soccer team won six straight, defeating Brewster Academy 3-0, Exeter 9-1, Nichols Junior 7-1, Harvard 2-0, Middlebury 5-0 and New Hampton 10-0.
And for the record, it appears that next fall's varsity football team can expect some help from this year's freshman eleven. The '57s had a good first line from end to end. Art Johnson and Monte Pascoe are two top ends. Captain George Bixby, a tackle, and Ed Stevens, another tackle, along with guards Larry Karacki, Wayne Kakela and John Donnelly and center Ludwig Landgraf, will certainly help. In the backfield halfbacks Lou Rovero, Tommy Trainer and Don Miller all are good prospects, while quarterback Mike Brown, the son of Coach Paul Brown of Cleveland, and fullback Roland Worthington are also rated as prospective varsity material.
PLENTY OF PROTECTION is provided for Dartmouth's quarterback Leo McKenna (20) as he gets ready to throw a pass in the Yale game. Spencer and Gaylord are teaming up on the effective block at the left, while Pierson (70) is doing the job in the middle.
DARTMOUTH'S FOURTH TOUCHDOWN against Yale is being scored by Dave McLaughlin, who took a pass from Beagle on the 10-yard line and bulled his way over. Thielscher (83) is also seen.
