Tentative plans are being made for the erection of the new fine arts building, the gift of which was announced by President Hopkins January 9. Mr. Frank P. Carpenter of Manchester, N. H., is the donor of $300,000 for this long-needed unit of the physical plant. The building will stand at the north-west corner of the library lot and connected with the library. The exact form which it will take has not yet been determined but it will provide space for exhibit rooms, lecture and recitation rooms, studios and quarters for visiting artists, seminar rooms, a club room as a social center, and offices for members of the department of modern art.
The hockey rink will be situated on the east of the Alumni Gymnasium and will be constructed of water-struck brick. The college architect, J. F. Larson, under whose supervision all the new buildings are being erected, announces that there will be an ice surface of 80 feet by 180 feet. The building will* be 144 feet by 218 feet, and will seat 2800. Standing room available will bring its capacity up to 3700. It is expected that the structure will be completed by next November. Although the plans call for natural ice, the committee in charge is considering the eventual installation of an artificial ice plant. Howard C. Davis 'O6, chairman of the rink committee appointed by President Hopkins, plans to have the rink in shape for laying the cornerstone at commencement time in June. The other members of the committee are: Halsey C. Edgerton, treasurer of the college, Lewis Parkhurst, senior member of the board of trustees, and Prof. Charles A. Proctor, chairman of the faculty committee on athletics.
