PHILADELPHIA ASSOCIATION
MARCH, 1928

The annual dinner and business meeting of the Philadelphia Alumni Association was held at the Pennsylvania Athletic Club Saturday evening, February 4th.

This was without question the best attended affair of its kind ever held by this association and was, of course, a tribute to President Hopkins. The committee in charge on rather short notice worked hard to put this dinner over and is deserving of much credit. To Ralph Britton, the man who never stops smiling, should go most of the credit as Ralph was chairman of the dinner committee.

Ninety members and guests sat down to dinner at 7 o'clock to the tune of that old favorite "As The Backs Go Tearing By." Tables to seat ten were arranged in front of the head table and everyone agreed that this was an improvement over the seating arrangements of other years. Everyone was free to sit where he pleased, and thus it was possible for men who had not seen each other for some years to sit together if they so desired.

Ed McMillan, member of the class which gave Pres. Hopkins to the College, acted as toastmaster. During the course of the dinner at 10 or 15 minute intervals, telegrams were handed to the secretary which, however, proved to be in each case fictitious. The following is a sample telegram: "I have just learned that the Earl of Dartmouth was an Englishman. Please wire it's not true." Signed Mayor Thompson. This little humorous stunt seemed to be enjoyed by everyone present.

Between courses, our very popular vice president, Sig Larmon, made a most successful job of introducing those present. When Sig attempts anything he always puts it across in good fashion. This was a hard job but wellhandled by Sig.

The first speaker was introduced as the Rev. Dr. MacFayden and his subject "Work among the heathen on the island of Guano." This address by Dr. MacFayden proved to be very humorous and was not what one might have expected after hearing the introduction of the toastmaster. Bookings of this famous, missionary, traveler, lecturer, and man of the world can be made by applying to Sig Larmon, % Philadelphia Association. Dinty Gardner '27 assisted the Reverend as chief engineer of the magic lantern machine. We hope to see more of the Rev. Dr. MacFayden.

Sid Hayward, assistant to the president, told us some interesting things about the College and no doubt would have told us a great deal more had there been more time. It was necessary for him to cut his talk short in order that he and President Hopkins might make train connections to Boston. We trust that we may have the pleasure of having Syd Hayward with us again in the not too distant future. As President Hopkins was introduced, Warrie Zeller, our official cheer leader, led the men in a Wah-Hoo-Wah for Prexy Hopkins. It was a treat to hear President Hopkins as the Philadelphia Association has not been as fortunate as some of the other alumni associations in this respect. If we never knew before, we know now what is the function of a college. Pudge Neidlinger, member of the Dartmouth Athletic Council and now hockey coach at Princeton, although promised that if he came to the dinner he would not be called upon to speak, did say a few words relative to the way the Athletic Council makes use of the receipts taken in at the various athletic contests. We certainly were glad that Pudge was able *to break away from his hockey duties at Princeton on the occasion of our annual dinner.

This annual dinner would not have been the success that it was had it not been for the support given by the Dartmouth Club of Central Pennsylvania with headquarters at Harrisburg. Frank Eastman 'O6, president of this association, headed a delegation of 12 men. Come along next year, Frank, and bring your gang along with you. Other out-of-town members present were Pray Wadham '03 from Wilkes-Barre, Lee Bauscher, Shorty Gray, and Price from Reading, Jess Stillman '14 from Wilmington, Jake Mensel 'l6 from Bristol, and Ed Steel '26 from Newark, Del.

The business meeting was short and snappy. The present officers

were reelected. It was the consensus of opinion of this meeting that a representative of the Philadelphia Association should be on the Alumni Council as the representative of this district. It was moved and seconded that Sigurd S. Larmon '14 be nominated for this office and everyone was urged to help put Sig into this office. There is no more loyal Dartmouth man in this district than Sig and he is deserving of the support of all Dartmouth men throughout this section of the country.

After the business; meeting, three reels of motion pictures were shown of student life at Hanover. The singing- of "Men of Dartmouth" brought the evening's festivities to a close.
