APRIL 1928 Ford H. Whelden

The annual banquet of the Dartmouth Club of Detroit was held in the abbey of the Detroit Athletic Club, at 6:45 P. M., on the evening of Saturday, February 18, 1928.

The Club had as its guests President Ernest Martin Hopkins of Dartmouth, Mr. Frank Cody, superintendent of Detroit public schools; Mr. Edwin L. Miller, superintendent of Detroit high schools; Head Coach Jesse Hawley of Dartmouth; the principals and football coaches of the high schools of Greater Detroit; Mr. Vaughn Blanchard, health education supervisor of Detroit high schools; the letter-men of the football team which wins the Dartmouth Cup; Mr. Andrew Oberlander, Ail-American halfback of Dartmouth's 1925 team, and Mr. William McCall of Muskegon, quarterback and captain of last season's All-State football team and guard on the All-State basketball team for the last two years.

The annual election of officers took place during the dinner. The following officers were chosen, all being re-elections: president, Alexander R. Maynard '05 ; vice-president, Dr. Carl E. Buck '13; secretary-treasurer, Ford H. Whelden '25.

The Dartmouth Cup was presented immediately following the dinner.

The Club showed two films after the speeches, one "The Winter Carnival of 1927" and the other, "A trip to the Outing Club Cabins" by Grantland Rice.

The following report of the secretary-treasurer, sums up the activities of the year: "The Club has just ended a most successful year. The attendance at the weekly luncheons for the 52 weeks ended January 17, 1928, averaged 17 1-2. For the first time, the luncheons were continued throughout the summer months, with no appreciable falling off in attendance. To the best of our knowledge, the Dartmouth Club of Detroit is the most active in the matter of attendance of weekly luncheons of any of the graduate clubs in the city. We have a total membership of 77 men, of whom 65 are active. 12 members attended from 26 to 49 of the possible 52 meetings of the year. Your Secretary with 49 and Charlie Bennett and Al Laffey with 46 attendances take the first three places in the competition.

"The activities of the club since the annual meeting last year, at which Professor Leon Richardson represented the College, have included two Pow Wows held in Canada, a bridge party at the Boat Club, radio or direct telegraphic returns of the football games with Harvard, Yale, Brown, and Cornell, and the annual dance at the Boat Club.

"Certainly the most outstanding accomplishment of the year is the Dartmouth College Cup, which was presented tonight for the first time. In behalf of the Club, I wish to thank at this time all those connected with the Detroit Board of Education, whose co-operation and advice made the work connected with this presentation a pleasure and a privilege.

"There are 21 Detroit men enrolled at Dartmouth as undergraduates at the present time, a larger number to the best of our knowledge than at any preceding time. We are especially pleased with the caliber of the Detroit men seeking admittance to Dartmouth at the present time.

"In concluding this report, your Treasurer wishes to express his gratitude for the splendid co-operation which the members, almost without exception, have given him in matters of the financial affairs of the Club."

Secretary.
