Again the word has gone out to be brief this month, because the lists of Alumni Fund contributors are longer than ever — which is just as well, for the mail has been scant and Sputnik has chased almost everything else out of the newspapers. At any rate, the clipping bureau hasn't been much help. Leading the items is a vital statistic: Mr. and Mrs. Sid Milnor have announced the marriage of their daughter Ann Champion to Mr. Hugh Darrell Williams at Towson, Md., on October 19 Ralph Dwinell has been appointed program director of the William Penn Center in Fallsington, Pa., an activity of the Friends Service Association.... Karl Friedmann, vicepresident of Girard College, Philadelphia, has been made acting president George Stevens is now Manager of Sales at the Metallon Stamping Plant, at Canfield, Ohio, of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation's Strip Steel Division.... George Gardner, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard and director of the Judge Baker Guidance Center, spoke to the freshman class on October 23 in one of the lectures of the Individual and the College Course. His subject was "Bases of Action."
What with having been on the ocean when it came out, it was only a few days ago that your Secretary, waiting in a barber shop, came across the July 6 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. The leading article, as most of you probably know already, is entitled "The Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss," and tells a world preoccupied with many a smaller talent about our own Ted Geisel. What this weary world could do with is more of his love of the taste of living and his inspired imagination.
The lucky guy hasn't been chosen yet, as this is written, but next month a new name will head this column as Secretary. By way of explanation, the following letter, written to Chairman Ed Burns on October 14, is now addressed to all of you:
The opening of a new college year has brought me face to face with a situation which has become all too clear during the year just past; namely, that I am no longer able to give to the task of being Class Secretary the time it requires if it is to be well done, and it is too important a job to be handled under such circumstances.
Regretfully, therefore, I must offer you my resignation. I suggest that it take effect on November 15, on which date the Executive Committee meets and will be able to elect a new secretary. I hope to be present at that time, so that I can turn the Class records over to my successor.
It is, I hope, unnecessary for me to tell you how sorry I am to have had to make this decision, which I have delayed as long as possible. If you wish, I shall continue as Newsletter Editor and do what I can, in that capacity, to help you and the other officers to serve the College we all love. To all of you, I must express my affectionate appreciation for your support and your loyalty, to which my poor efforts owe whatever success they may have had. With warmest regards, I am
Cordially yours, Herb
