Herbert Hoover was chosen to be the next president in the straw ballot conducted by TheDartmouth recently. A total of 1316 votes were cast, of which Hoover received 659. His closest opponent was Al Smith, with 279. The complete tally follows:
Republican
Herbert Hoover 659 Charles G. Dawes 174 Frank O. Lowden 48 Charles Curtis 6 Frank B. Willis 6 TOTAL 893
Democrat
Alfred E. Smith 279 Albert C. Ritchie 33 James A. Reed 20 Thomas J. Walsh 13 A. Victor Donahey 3 TOTAL . 349 Others 75 GRAND TOTAL 1316
A few votes were cast for prominent members of the faculty and student body, and for local characters. "Bossy" Gillis received 12 votes and James Maurer, Socialist, received only five votes. The balloting has caused The Dartmouth to comment that the college seems to reflect the attitude of the country, in returning a large conservative Republican majority. Governor Smith and his wet platform does not seem to attract student votes.
