THE OLD INDIAN SCHOOL
DECEMBER 1929

This rather handsome building is now Chandler Hall, believe it or not as you choose. The photograph was taken before 1870. In order to modernize the building in those days of more than 50 years ago, the Colonial tower and roof were removed, the windows were lengthened, and a mansard roof was imposed. Then an Italian balcony effect was added, and with an addition or two the building was made to look as it does now. In 1830 this building was known as Moor Hall, being the charity school for Indians. Later it became known as the Academy when it served as a preparatory school. The original building was the rival of the White Church and Dartmouth Hall in simplicity and beauty.
