The Dartmouth Glee Club, under the direction of Prof. H. P. Whitford, again took first place in the Intercollegiate Glee Club Contest held in Carnegie Hall, New York. The New York University Glee Club placed second and the singers of Ohio State University took third.
This makes the third first place for Dartmouth and brings permanent possession of the trophy offered by the Intercollegiate Musical Council. By winning the contest last year Dartmouth tied with Yale and Wesleyan who also claimed two first places but the cup is now removed from competition by Dartmouth's third victory.
The contest this year was the 13th held under the auspices of the Intercollegiate Musical Council but this is the first permanent award which has been made. Clubs from all parts of the East and Middle West competed after first establishing their superiority in sectional elimination contests. Dartmouth, however, enters directly as a charter member of the intercollegiate association.
The club is led this year by J. S. Marsh'30 and directed by Professor Whitford who also directed the organization when it won last year. He succeeded Prof. L. B. McWhood who was the director when Dartmouth first won the contest in 1923.
The contestants are judged on tone, diction, pitch, ensemble and interpretation and except when the various clubs sing the songs of their particular college it is impossible for the judges to tell which club is singing. The judging is done individually by ballot and the prize song, which was "Songs My Mother Taught Me" by Dvorak, a choice song, and a college song, are taken as the basis of rating. Dartmouth's victory in the contest thus express superiority over the 13 other contestants representing the winners of seven sectional contests and definitely places it as one of the best of American college glee clubs.
