In looking over some of his college memorabilia recently, Rev. S. W. Adriance, class of 1873, found a small group photograph of the original band of Fisk Jubilee Singers, who toured this country in the effort to raise funds for Fisk University. They introduced to the world the new and plaintive songs of the Southern Negro, still popular and now known as Negro Spirituelles or Spirituals, such as "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Roll, Jordan, Roll," etc. Underneath the group on this card were placed, at the time of the concert, the names of the eight singers of the group and the accompanist in their relative positions. These photographs were sold to the audience during the intermission.
This small photograph Mr. Adriance sent to the president of Fisk University recently and received a grateful answer, stating that it was most welcome, as the University possessed no photograph of that group. An enlarged group photograph is to be printed and framed and hung in one of the halls. Of that original group of eight singers and the accompanist, only two are now living.
Rev. George A. Gates, D.D., of the class of 1873, was, at the time of his tragic death, President of Fisk University, and received the injury which ultimately caused his death, in the railroad accident at Warriors Bridge, Pa., while on a tour North to solicit funds for Fisk University.
