A new director in a new field, Philip A. Stedfast '46 has accepted the position of Director of the Planning Department for the City of Columbia, S. C. He received the Master's degree in regional planning from the University of North Carolina in August 1951, and before undertaking his present work was director of the Chester County (Pa.) Planning Commission.

In Columbia Mr. Stedfast and his assistants act as the technical staff for the 15-member City Planning Commission, and will be responsible for the administration of plans developed by the Commission.

He has served as a member of the technical advisory committee on local transportation of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission; on the Planning and Research Committee of the Greater Philadelphia-South Jersey Council; and on the Town Planning Council of the West Chester Civil Association. He was also a planning technician with the Poughkeepsie Area Development Association in New York.

After having had his college course interrupted by wartime service in the Air Force, Stedfast returned to Dartmouth to be a sociology major, receiving his degree in 1949.
