THE ALUMNI MAGAZINE
June 1929

EBIC P. KELLY '06 and ALBERT W. FKEY '20

During the past year the ALUMNI MAGAZINE has been under the direction of Professor Eric P. Kelly '06 with the active cooperation of Sydney C. Hayward '26 and the same board of editors as in recent years. There was a general consensus of opinion that in its new format and its interesting content the MAGAZINE has been more interesting than ever before.

In reporting for the editors Professor Kelly told of the studies which had been made before adopting the new format and of the unanimous conclusion which was arrived at by all those engaged in the study to present the MAGAZINE in the form which it has maintained throughout the current volume. He told of the desire of the editors to give a picture of the life of the College as it was reflected in the curriculum and among the alumni and the undergraduates. He also emphasized the importance of the class notes which were really the foundation on which the MAGAZINE was built and showed how favorably they compared in quantity and quality with the similar sections of other alumni magazines. In concluding he stated that suggestions and assistance from alumni were always welcome.

Much of the credit for the improved MAGAZINE is due to the business manager, A. W. Prey '20, and his report showed the progress of the past year. The total subscription list is now 5225, showing a net gain for the year of 450. At the present time 55% of the graduates subscribe to the MAGAZINE and 13% of the non-graduates. In comparison with other colleges the percentage of graduates subscribing is gratifying and of the colleges reported on, only one showed a higher percentage, in that case nearly 100%, resulting from its system of unit class subscriptions. In our case four classes have dropped the unit plan of subscription and three have adopted it, making a net loss of one class. The balance sheet shows the MAGAZINE to be solvent and also the report was received that final payment had been made of the loan of $3,000 from the College which has been under liquidation for some years past.

At the conclusion of these reports on the MAGAZINE Mr. A. M. Strong '92 congratulated the editors on behalf of the other secretaries on the excellent work of the past year and wished the Association to go on record in commendation of their efforts. This sentiment was put to a vote and unanimously carried.

NATHANIEL G. BURLEIGH '11 is the newly elected president of the Secretaries Association. He graduated from Dartmouth with the degree of A.B. in 1911 and received the degree of M.C.S. in 1912. Subsequent to graduation he was with the Boston Elevated Railway Company and with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut, until 1919. For the last ten years he has been a member of the Tuck School faculty and is now Professor of Industrial Organization in that school. He is also graduate manager of the Council on Student Organizations.
