An endowment fund of $1,000,000 has been given to the College by Mr. George F. Baker of New York City for the maintenance of the Baker Memorial Library. Thus has Mr. Baker, who three years ago gave Dartmouth $1,000,000 in memory of his uncle, Fisher Ames Baker '59 for the erection of its long-needed library, again shown his generous and friendly interest in the College. The income from this gift, which has been confirmed by both Mr. Baker and President Hopkins, will be used for the large expense of the yearly operation of the Baker Library. When the new building was first occupied two years ago the annual expense of maintaining and operating the library was increased by $60,000 over the operating figure for Wilson Hall, the former library.
Mr. Baker's two gifts, together with the Sanborn Fund for the annual purchase of books, provides Dartmouth with a beautiful, well-endowed and completely equipped intellectual center of the College.
